READINGS
In Riding with Kismet, while graduating at Oxford, the hero suffers an experience that suggests that he rediscovers himself in a place where no one knows him. So he goes off to South Africa to work as a taxi driver.
One of his fares is a young woman on her way to a party. Acting on impulse, she asks him to be her partner. Once inside, he asks her to dance with him.
THE TANGO
Are you interested in good music? Does the the superb talent of a great solo artist fascinate you?
Well then, come with me.
Down to the field. I'd like
you to listen to "el Maestro".
DOWN WHERE THE CRICKETS PLAY
As the age of the Romantic Poets came to an end in France, a new form of poetry was born. It began with the works of Beaudelaire but soon Paris was glowing in the light of the so-called Symbolist Poets.
There was a light but there were also shadows.
THE SYMBOLIST POETS
Sometimes you know that you have an emptiness in your soul and so when destiny beckons, what can you do? If you trust the call, you will go down to the quayside and you ask a boatman to take you to that island that seems to be beckoning.
This is about such a trip.
A WOMAN OF SUBSTANCE
The true beauty of art, music and dancing blossoms when there is soaring freedom of the spirit. To understand this think for a moment about the unbridled passion revealed in a van Gogh painting.
Have you ever been to an over-organised poetry meeting where you tend to forget what poetry is all about. You hear about Cinquains, Villanelles and other poetry forms and the constraints of rhyming verse. You hear discussions on whether each line should begin with a capital letter or not. When I hear all this I long for a sign of joy.
Perhaps it is refreshing for the soul to go out into the country to see a horse gallop or to see an antelope moving freely through a wood. And what about listening to a violinist play at a country dance? With joy comes a sense of freedom.
